Hyderabad.24.07.2024: Generally, the prices of vegetables should decrease during the rainy season. However, this year is different, as vegetable prices are skyrocketing. Especially, the tomato price, which is loved by all, has hit the century mark. This sudden rise has shocked many, as the price of a kilo is now Rs. 100. Many people are humorously saying that tomatoes are now a luxury item.
Complaints from Buyers
Buyers are complaining that the farmers’ markets in Hyderabad are selling tomatoes beyond the fixed price. If the official price is Rs. 51 per kg, they are selling it at Rs. 70. In the open market, the tomato price ranges from Rs. 90 to Rs. 100, making it difficult for most middle-class consumers to afford.
Decreased Supply and Increased Demand
Previously, 6,000 quintals of tomatoes used to arrive at Rythu Bazars in the city daily. Currently, the harvest has dropped to only 2.5 to 3 thousand quintals. Traders explain that the demand has increased significantly, leading to the surge in prices. It is expected that these prices will remain high as there is no significant yield until the next harvest.
In conclusion, the tomato price continues to affect the common people, making it a pressing issue for many households.
