Key point: Telangana reported the second highest number of cyber crime cases in India in 2023, with 18,236 cases, behind Karnataka (21,889).
Overall trend
There was a sharp increase in cyber crime in Telangana: a 19% rise from 2022 and a 77% increase from 2021. The state accounted for 21.1% of India’s total 86,420 cyber crime cases in 2023.
Chargesheet rate: 20.9% (relatively low compared to many states)
Fraud dominates cyber crime
Fraud was the largest category, with 10,626 cases. Major types of fraud included:
- OTP frauds: 4,223
- Online banking frauds: 1,868
- Credit/debit card frauds: 855
- ATM-related frauds: 580
Other offences included cheating (6,384 cases), cyberstalking and bullying (263), blackmail or threats (213), fake news (98) and fake profiles (47).
Hyderabad: one of the worst-hit metros
Hyderabad recorded 4,855 cyber crime cases in 2023, a 9.4% increase from 2022. Bengaluru remained the highest among metros with 17,631 cases.
In Hyderabad, most cases were fraud (4,076). Breakdown of major categories in the city:
- OTP frauds: 2,858
- Online banking frauds: 709
- Credit/debit card frauds: 211
- ATM-related frauds: 156
The city also reported cyberstalking (163), blackmail (152), obscene content transmission (110), identity theft (97) and impersonation cheating (96).
Chargesheet rate: 17.3% (one of the lowest among big cities)
Other metros
Mumbai recorded 4,131 cases (chargesheet rate 21.6%) and Lucknow reported 1,453 cases (chargesheet rate 19.0%).
