Hyderabad, Feb 1, 2026 — Former Telangana Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) was questioned for nearly five hours by the Telangana Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday in connection with the alleged phone-tapping scandal during his party’s rule in the state.
The interrogation took place at KCR’s Nandi Nagar residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, beginning around 3 p.m. and continuing into the evening. SIT officials, in a tightly secured environment with barricades and heavy police deployment, probed Rao on aspects of the phone-tapping probe that has been under investigation since 2024.
Tense Build-Up and Security
Ahead of the questioning, KCR traveled from his farmhouse in Erravalli, Siddipet district, about 70 km from Hyderabad, to his city residence despite earlier disagreements with investigators about the venue. Elaborate security measures were put in place around the property to manage supporters and maintain order.
Supporters and BRS cadres gathered outside, greeting the former CM with slogans and flowers, showcasing political support and turning the event into a charged public moment.
What Happened During the SIT Session
A team of senior SIT officers conducted the interrogation, recording the proceedings on audio and video. The official questioning focused on alleged unauthorized surveillance of phones of politicians, journalists and others during the previous BRS administration — central to the phone-tapping allegations.
According to reports, KCR’s legal team and close aides, including family members, were present at the residence while questioning was underway.
Political Reactions
The BRS described the SIT notice and the interrogation as part of political harassment, alleging that the ruling Congress government is targeting KCR for political reasons. Protests by BRS supporters erupted across Telangana as the news spread.
In contrast, senior state leaders from the ruling party denied any vindictive intent, asserting that the inquiry is a lawful part of the ongoing investigation into alleged illegal surveillance activities.
Background of the Phone-Tapping Case
The phone-tapping case first came to light during investigations into alleged unauthorized surveillance carried out by state intelligence during the BRS government’s term. A Special Investigation Team was constituted in late 2025 to expedite the probe.
Several high-ranking officials and associates have already been questioned or implicated in the case. The SIT’s scrutiny now includes top political figures from the former government as it advances toward potential charges.
As the situation develops, authorities and political parties remain sharply divided over the legal and political implications of the interrogation. The phone-tapping probe continues to be a focal point in Telangana’s political discourse ahead of upcoming elections.
