Hyderabad.18.08.2024: The power distribution companies in Telangana have announced that customers can once again pay their electricity bills using UPI-based apps. This decision comes after a temporary suspension that began on July 1, when the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) and Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGNPDCL) stopped accepting payments through various gateways, including UPI apps, in line with guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The change has been reversed following an update from NPCI Bharat Bill Pay Limited (NBBL), which confirmed that both TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL have been onboarded onto the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) platform. This move allows consumers across Telangana to securely pay their current bills using any BBPS-enabled platform, which includes hundreds of banks and fintech apps and websites.
This reinstatement of UPI payment options is expected to ease the bill payment process for consumers and streamline collections for the power distribution companies. TGSPDCL had previously been accepting payments through PhonePe, and discussions were ongoing with other companies like Google Pay and Amazon Pay to expand payment options further, according to an official from the company.
Now, with the integration into BBPS, residents of Telangana can conveniently pay their current bills using a wide range of UPI-enabled apps and platforms, ensuring greater accessibility and security in their transactions.
