Hyderabad, 09.08.2024 – The Telangana government has taken a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issue of ration and health card eligibility by forming a new Cabinet sub-committee. This committee will be led by Food and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, with the primary responsibility of examining and recommending the eligibility criteria and modalities for issuing new food security (ration) cards and health cards.
The sub-committee includes Ministers Damodar Rajanarsimha and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy as its members, while the Principal Secretary to the government, Consumer Affairs, Food, and Civil Supplies Department, will serve as the convener.
For the past decade, the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government had refrained from issuing new ration cards, and even basic updates such as the deletion and addition of names were not permitted. This decision left many newly married couples and their families without access to essential government services tied to ration cards, putting them in a difficult position.
The denial of ration cards had far-reaching consequences, as people were unable to benefit from various government schemes linked to these cards. While the BRS government did issue a limited number of ration cards during the Huzurabad and Munugode by-elections, these were confined to those constituencies, leaving the majority of the state’s population without support.
The newly formed sub-committee’s findings and recommendations are expected to address these issues and bring much-needed relief to those affected by the previous government’s policies.
