RTC buses from women’s groups

Good news for RTC passengers in Telangana. RTC buses from women’s groups are soon set to hit the roads, offering relief from overcrowding and improving travel comfort. Under the Indira Mahila Shakti scheme, women’s self-help groups are providing buses to RTC on a rental basis.

RTC Buses from Women’s Groups Ready for Launch

As part of the initiative, around 200 new buses have completed body building and are ready to begin services. Officials said these buses will be deployed once the government gives formal approval.

  • 200 buses fully ready for operations
  • More buses to be added in phases
  • Focus on reducing congestion in district routes

Women Empowerment at the Core of the Scheme

The Telangana government is giving strong priority to women empowerment. Several schemes have been introduced to financially strengthen women’s self-help groups across the state.

Under this vision, the Indira Mahila Shakti scheme encourages women’s associations to invest in income-generating assets. RTC buses from women’s groups are one such effort, combining public transport needs with women-led economic growth.

The scheme was formally launched by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on March 8 last year, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Role of Women’s Associations

Women’s savings groups have already established petrol pumps and food processing units under government guidance. Now, they are also becoming partners in strengthening public transport.

By leasing buses to RTC, these groups earn steady monthly income while supporting essential services.

Current Status of Bus Leasing

At present, 152 buses from women’s associations are already operating under RTC. These buses are run by RTC drivers and conductors, ensuring uniform service standards.

For each bus, RTC pays a monthly rent of Rs. 69,468 to the respective women’s group. The arrangement has been working smoothly, according to officials.

  • 152 buses already in service
  • RTC provides drivers and conductors
  • Monthly rent paid to women’s groups

More RTC Buses from Women’s Groups Coming Soon

In addition to the existing fleet, another 200 buses are ready for immediate deployment. Officials also confirmed that 248 more buses are expected to be ready by the end of next month.

Once all phases are completed, a total of 600 RTC buses from women’s groups are expected to be on the roads across Telangana.

Pilot Districts Show Positive Results

The pilot project was launched last year in Mahabubnagar, Karimnagar, and Warangal districts. These regions were selected to assess operational feasibility and passenger response.

Officials said the pilot buses helped ease pressure on crowded routes and improved passenger satisfaction.

Impact of Free Travel Scheme on RTC

After the Congress government came to power, the Mahalaxmi scheme was introduced to provide free travel for women. As a result, passenger numbers on RTC buses increased sharply.

However, the surge also led to overcrowding, especially on district routes. In many buses, passengers found it difficult even to stand comfortably.

The introduction of RTC buses from women’s groups has helped address this challenge by increasing fleet capacity.

Pressure Reduced, Passengers Relieved

Earlier, RTC depended heavily on buses rented from private individuals. The new model, involving women’s associations, has reduced operational pressure while ensuring social benefits.

Passengers are now experiencing comparatively tension-free journeys, especially during peak hours.

Future Expansion Plans

Officials said SERP has decided to provide the remaining buses in a phased manner. With 200 buses ready now and others nearing completion, the full target is expected to be achieved soon.

The government is expected to give a green signal shortly, allowing these buses to be deployed across more routes.

Conclusion

The rollout of RTC buses from women’s groups marks a significant step toward inclusive development in Telangana. The initiative not only strengthens public transport but also empowers women economically.

With more buses set to hit the roads, passengers can look forward to safer, less crowded, and more reliable travel in the coming months.
