New Delhi, April 20,2026: The MGNREGA implementation process was reviewed on April 18, 2026, by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a meeting with State and Union Territory officials. The discussion focused on ensuring uninterrupted employment and preparing for the rollout of a new rural mission.

MGNREGA implementation

The meeting, held via video conferencing, assessed the progress of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the readiness of States for the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin.

The Union Minister stressed that work under MGNREGA must continue smoothly at the ground level. He said timely availability of work and prompt wage payments remain top priorities. States were advised to ensure enough projects at the Gram Panchayat level so workers do not face delays in getting employment.

He reiterated that every worker seeking employment should receive work within the stipulated timeframe. Wage payments must also be processed without delays at all administrative levels.

The Minister highlighted the importance of proper worksite management and urged States to issue Job Cards to all eligible rural households. He said no willing household should be left without access to livelihood opportunities.

To support MGNREGA implementation, the government has released Rs 17,744.19 crore to States and Union Territories as the first installment for the 2026 to 27 financial year. The funds are meant for wage payments, with additional allocations available for material and administrative needs.

Shri Chouhan described the current period as a transition phase, where maintaining employment under MGNREGA is crucial while preparing for the new rural mission.

Referring to the upcoming programme, he said it aims to provide a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment to rural households. The initiative is aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and focuses on strengthening rural livelihoods.

The Minister called on States and Union Territories to complete all preparations in a time-bound manner. He also encouraged them to share feedback to make the programme more effective, transparent, and outcome-oriented.

The government is expected to continue coordination with States to ensure smooth implementation and transition to the new framework.
