In a surprising move, Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came to the defense of BJP’s Smriti Irani, urging people to cease the derogatory comments directed at her. Gandhi emphasized that winning and losing are inherent aspects of life and that humiliating others reflects weakness, not strength.

Gandhi’s statement comes in response to the wave of online criticism Irani faced after vacating her official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi, a consequence of her defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from Amethi. Irani lost to Congress’s Kishori Lal Sharma by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes, the very seat she famously won from Gandhi in the 2019 elections.

“Winning and losing happen in life. I urge everyone to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt. Smriti Irani or any other leader for that matter. Humiliating and insulting people is a sign of weakness, not strength,” Gandhi remarked.

Following her defeat, Irani vacated her official bungalow at 28 Tughlak Crescent in Delhi earlier this week. Her loss was met with derisive comments from Congress supporters, who labeled it a “humiliating defeat” and contrasted it with Irani’s celebration of Gandhi’s previous loss.

Before the election, Irani had commented on Gandhi’s decision to contest from Raebareli instead of Amethi, interpreting it as a significant concession of defeat by the Congress party. She had previously accused Gandhi of running away from challenges, referencing his past move to Wayanad after a defeat.

Irani’s recent vacating of her official residence was in line with the requirement for former ministers and MPs to leave government accommodation within a month of a new government being formed. Gandhi’s call for civility underscores a need for respectful political discourse amidst heated electoral battles.
