Yamaha has launched the new YZF-R2 in India with prices starting at Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom Delhi), marking the company’s first entry into the 200cc motorcycle segment. The Quick Shifter variant is priced at Rs 2,39,500, while the range-topping YZF-R2 M costs Rs 2,53,000. Deliveries through Yamaha Blue Square dealerships will begin from mid-September 2026.
All-New 204cc Engine with 26.5 PS
The YZF-R2 is built on an all-new platform and draws power from a new 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve single-cylinder engine that produces 26.5 PS of peak power and 19.1 Nm of torque. The motor uses finger-follower rocker arms and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating technology derived from Yamaha’s larger performance motorcycles, which the company says reduces friction and reciprocating mass while improving efficiency and high-rev performance.
Yamaha has placed emphasis on low weight, with the motorcycle tipping the scales at just 149 kg. The newly developed high-tensile steel tube diamond frame weighs 14 kg, and the chassis geometry takes inspiration from the YZF-R6. Suspension consists of 37 mm USD front forks and a rear monoshock, while braking duties are handled with dual-channel ABS, traction control and an assist and slipper clutch offered as standard on 17-inch wheels.
Three Variants, Five Colour Options
The R2 is available in three variants and five colours. The base variant comes in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray. The Quick Shifter variant, offered in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue, adds Yamaha’s third-generation bi-directional quickshifter, claimed to be a segment-first feature. The top-spec R2 M, exclusive to Metallic Gray, further gets adjustable front forks, adjustable rear suspension, adjustable clutch and brake levers, a faux suede-finished seat, a silver-finished swingarm and Smart Key functionality.
Features on the motorcycle include a 5-inch full-colour TFT display with connectivity and navigation, along with Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) offering Street, Sport and Rain riding modes. The styling follows Yamaha’s latest R-Series direction, with the fairing taking cues from the R9 and rear lighting elements inspired by the R1.
Background and Outlook
India is the first market globally to receive the YZF-R2, underlining the significance of the launch for Yamaha’s Indian operations. According to the company, more than one million R-Series motorcycles are currently on Indian roads. The R2 slots between the R15 and the twin-cylinder R3, offering substantially more performance than the R15 at a lower price point than larger multi-cylinder models. The launch comes amid rising competition in the 150cc-200cc performance segment, where Yamaha recorded sales of 35,796 units in July 2026, a 36.38 percent year-on-year growth.
