Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway are set to share the screen in the upcoming sequel to Days of Thunder, with the Hollywood racing drama scheduled to arrive in theatres in summer 2028.
The sequel will see Cruise return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway is set to play a racecar team owner and engineer.
Tom Cruise announced Anne Hathaway’s casting in a social media video, confirming that the two actors will headline the follow-up to the 1990 film directed by Tony Scott. In the video, Hathaway jokingly discussed the planned production schedule before the pair confirmed the film’s expected summer 2028 theatrical release.
Paramount Pictures has scheduled the Days of Thunder sequel for release on June 2, 2028. According to reports, the film will be shot for IMAX screens and released exclusively in theatres, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX formats.
Jonathan Levine will direct the sequel, with Tom Cruise producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Further plot details about the new Days of Thunder movie have not yet been revealed.
“I’m gonna have this baby, and then we’re gonna make this movie,” Hathaway says in the announcement video while discussing the upcoming project.
The original Days of Thunder, released in 1990, starred Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, a talented driver recruited to compete in NASCAR. The film also featured Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly.
The sequel adds another major franchise project to Cruise’s upcoming slate following the Mission: Impossible series. Hathaway, meanwhile, is expected to appear in several upcoming projects, including Verity and Mother Mary.
With Tom Cruise returning to one of his best-known racing roles and Anne Hathaway joining the franchise, the Days of Thunder sequel will bring the Hollywood stars together for a major theatrical release in 2028.
