South Africa Women registered their first victory of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a narrow two-wicket win over Pakistan at Edgbaston on Wednesday. Despite the result, the team’s performance raised concerns ahead of upcoming matches against stronger opponents.
South Africa appeared to be in complete control after reducing Pakistan to 50 for 8 in the 11th over. However, Pakistan fought back through an unbeaten 55 from Fatima Sana, who shared a 71-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Tuba Hassan. The recovery helped Pakistan finish on 126 for 9 after being under severe pressure.
Chasing 127, South Africa struggled despite having several experienced batters in their lineup. The team slipped to 107 for 6 in the 15th over before eventually reaching the target with 19 balls remaining.
Annerie Dercksen played a key role in the chase with 52 runs from 35 deliveries. Nadine de Klerk added 37 from 28 balls, while support from the lower order helped South Africa cross the finish line.
Speaking after the match, Dercksen acknowledged the team’s tendency to make matches difficult. She said, “I said to the team I’m probably going to die 30 years before I should, because we have a knack of doing this. But the main thing is we ended up on the right side.”
She also praised the team’s ability to recover under pressure and expressed confidence in the batting unit. Dercksen said she was proud that the side managed to secure the win and remained confident in the strength of the batting lineup.
The victory came after South Africa’s disappointing defeat against Australia at Old Trafford, where they were bowled out for 107 and lost by 65 runs. The win against Pakistan kept their tournament campaign alive and provided an important boost.
However, the team remains in a challenging position in the competition. Another defeat could significantly affect their chances of reaching the semifinals.
India currently sit in a stronger position after opening the tournament with victories over Pakistan and Netherlands. Their performances have placed them among the early contenders in the group.
South Africa will next face India in Manchester on Sunday. The match presents an opportunity for the team to strengthen its position in the tournament, but they will need a more convincing performance than those produced so far.
