Telangana Government May Raise Employees’ Retirement Age to 65
Hyderabad.27.01.2025: The Telangana government is actively considering a proposal to increase the retirement age for state government employees from 61 to 65 years. This decision is being weighed due to the state’s financial constraints and the growing backlog of pending payments to employees and pensioners.
Pending Financial Obligations
In 2021, the previous government led by K. Chandrashekar Rao increased the retirement age from 58 to 61 years. However, this move faced criticism from unemployed youth, who claimed it reduced job opportunities. The current Congress government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is cautious about a similar backlash but is exploring this option to manage financial pressures.
The government currently owes employees and pensioners over ₹8,200 crore in pending bills. Another ₹5,000 crore will be required in the next six to eight months as 6,000 employees are set to retire. With limited funds available, enhancing the retirement age is seen as a way to delay lump-sum payments like pensions, gratuity, and other benefits.
The government has been releasing ₹6,500 crore monthly for salaries and pensions but is struggling to clear other dues such as medical reimbursements. A senior official estimated that over ₹20,000 crore would be required to cover retirement benefits for employees retiring between 2025 and 2028.
Impact on Professors and Youth
On Sunday, the Chief Minister announced plans to increase the retirement age of professors in state-run universities from 60 to 65 years, sparking speculation about a broader change for all government employees. The Congress government claims it has provided 55,000 jobs to youth and plans to fill more vacancies as per its job calendar.
Despite these assurances, employee unions believe extending the retirement age is inevitable due to the state’s financial challenges. This move could delay payments and help the government manage its fiscal responsibilities in the short term.
