April 13, 2025 | Khammam, Telangana: Daripalli Ramaiah, a well-known environmentalist from Telangana, passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday morning due to a heart attack. His family said he had been unwell for some time. He was taken to Khammam government hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Ramaiah, lovingly called the “Tree Man of Telangana” or “Vanajeevi Ramaiah,” dedicated his life to planting and protecting trees. He lived in Reddipalli village and used part of his own land to grow trees. Locals say he planted around one crore (10 million) saplings in the Khammam district and surrounding areas.
He was often seen carrying seeds and saplings in his bicycle bag, planting them wherever he found empty land. He also wore a green board around his neck that read “Vriksho Rakshati Rakshitaha” (Save trees, they will save you).
Though he only studied till Class 10, Ramaiah taught himself about trees and plants by reading many books. In 2017, he received the Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for his efforts in increasing green cover.
He also supported the Telangana government’s green mission ‘Haritha Haram’ and traveled across the state to promote it. His inspiring story was included in Telangana school textbooks last year.
Many political leaders paid tribute to Ramaiah. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him as a champion of sustainability and a source of inspiration for youth. Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said Ramaiah’s love for nature and his selfless service will always be remembered.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said Ramaiah believed that humans cannot survive without nature and inspired society through his dedication. Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said Ramaiah’s contribution is a big loss to both Telangana and the country.
Former Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao and Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed their condolences.
Ramaiah is survived by his wife Janakamma and four sons.
