The Telangana government has introduced a redesigned uniform policy for students studying in government schools across the state, replacing the long-used red-ash coloured uniforms with a new colour scheme. The initiative aims to provide students with improved-quality uniforms and additional accessories as part of the 2026-27 academic year.

Under the revised policy, around 27 lakh students enrolled in government schools will receive two sets of uniforms free of cost. Education department officials said the new designs have been created in two categories to distinguish between regular government schools and residential institutions.

For students in regular government schools, boys will receive light blue shirts paired with dark blue trousers, while girls will be provided with light blue tops and dark blue bottoms. Students studying in residential (Gurukul) schools will receive maroon check-pattern tops along with plain maroon lower garments.

The Education Department has also made trousers mandatory for boys studying in Classes 6 and 7, replacing the earlier dress pattern followed in these grades. Officials said the decision is intended to maintain uniformity across upper primary classes.

To ensure better durability, the government has procured approximately 2.41 crore metres of fabric from Mafatlal Industries and another 55.32 lakh metres from the Telangana handloom sector. The uniforms are expected to be stitched using quality materials for extended use during the academic year.

In a first for government schools in Telangana, students will also receive shoes, socks and belts along with their uniforms. Residential school students will be provided with an expanded student kit that includes a school bag, tie, bedding, plate and drinking glass.

The state government has also extended student support to government junior colleges. Around two lakh junior college students will receive school bags, belts, ties, shoes and socks as part of the initiative.

Officials said the stitching work for all uniforms has been entrusted to women Self-Help Groups (SHGs), a move aimed at supporting rural livelihoods while ensuring timely delivery of uniforms before the academic session progresses.

The government stated that the initiative is part of its broader efforts to strengthen public education infrastructure and improve the overall learning environment for students studying in government educational institutions.
