Hyderabad, March 18: The Telangana government is considering providing house plots for journalists, Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said on Wednesday. He stated that the government is working to ensure the benefit reaches genuine journalists while addressing issues related to accreditation.
Replying to questions from opposition members during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the Congress government has no intention of dividing journalists. He clarified that the main goal is to provide accreditation cards to genuine journalists.
The minister explained that the government initially issued Government Order 252 regarding accreditation. However, after receiving suggestions from journalists’ associations, the order was revised to address their concerns.
He noted that some misunderstandings were being spread regarding the issuance of accreditation cards. To ensure that all eligible journalists receive accreditation, the government has set up a committee to review the process.
The government is also open to making further amendments if necessary. Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that a circular could be issued if additional changes are required after consultations.
The minister also announced that the state government plans to introduce a Digital Media Policy within the next two to three months. He said the policy has already been drafted and will soon be finalized.
Regarding welfare measures, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the government is examining the proposal to provide house plots for journalists. Efforts are being made to ensure that the distribution process does not face legal hurdles in courts.
He added that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had clearly mentioned the issue during the recent International Women’s Day event. According to the minister, the government is working towards making an announcement on the matter soon.
The minister further said the government will not step back when it comes to protecting the job security of journalists.
The proposed initiatives, including accreditation reforms, the digital media policy and welfare measures such as house plots for journalists, are expected to be finalized in the coming months.
