Rohit Sharma Breaks Chris Gayle’s Record in Cuttack ODI

The historic moment took place during the second ODI against England at Cuttack on Sunday. Rohit Sharma, known as the Hitman, smashed two massive sixes early in the innings, surpassing Gayle’s tally.

Before this match, Chris Gayle had hit 331 sixes in 301 ODI matches, while Rohit Sharma was close behind. However, with his phenomenal performance, Rohit’s six-count has now reached 335, taking him past the “Universal Boss” in the record books.

Shahid Afridi’s Record in Sight for Rohit Sharma

Despite this incredible feat, Rohit Sharma is still chasing another major record—the most sixes in ODI cricket history. This record is currently held by former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi, who smashed 351 sixes in 398 ODIs.

With just 16 more sixes to go, Rohit is on track to surpass Afridi’s record soon. Given his explosive batting form, he is likely to achieve this milestone before the end of the Champions Trophy.

Rohit Sharma: The King of Sixes in All Formats

Rohit Sharma is already the undisputed king of six-hitting across all three formats of cricket. He has now hit a staggering 626 sixes in international cricket (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is combined), more than any other player in history.

India’s Run Chase: Rohit and Gill Shine

  • Rohit started aggressively and smashed a 30-ball half-century, looking well set for a century.
  • His opening partner, Shubman Gill, also played brilliantly, scoring 60 runs off 52 balls with 9 fours and 6 sixes.
  • However, Virat Kohli (5 runs) had an off day, failing to make an impact.

England’s First Innings: Duckett and Root Lead the Way

Earlier in the match, England posted a competitive total of 304 runs before being bowled out in 49.5 overs.

  • Ben Duckett (65 off 56 balls, 10 fours) and Joe Root (69 off 72 balls, 6 fours) led the charge with solid half-centuries.
  • Contributions from Liam Livingstone (41 off 32 balls, 2 fours, 2 sixes) and Jos Buttler (34 off 35 balls, 2 fours) helped England reach a strong total.

Indian Bowlers Deliver Key Breakthroughs

  • Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets for just 35 runs.
  • Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, Hardik Pandya, and Varun Chakravarthy chipped in with one wicket each.

Can Rohit Sharma Achieve Another Milestone?

With Rohit Sharma just 16 sixes away from breaking Shahid Afridi’s record, cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the moment. His red-hot form makes it highly likely that he will achieve this historic feat soon.

Key Takeaways:

  • ✅ Rohit Sharma surpasses Chris Gayle in most ODI sixes (335 sixes).
  • ✅ Shahid Afridi’s record (351 sixes) is within reach.
  • ✅ Rohit Sharma holds the record for most sixes in all formats (626 sixes).
