New Delhi, March,12,2026: The continuation of MGNREGS work in April is under discussion as the Central government considers extending employment guarantee works into the next financial year. A formal announcement on the decision is expected around March 17.

According to the available information, the Centre is reviewing the continuation of employment works under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for April. The move is being examined to ensure that workers continue to receive job opportunities at the beginning of the new financial year.

Officials are considering the allocation of additional workdays under the scheme. For the financial year 2026 to 27, around 24 workdays are being discussed as part of the employment allocation plan.

The proposal is part of a broader review of the programme’s funding and implementation. Estimates suggest that around Rs 5.10 lakh crore would be required for the implementation of employment related programmes during the period under consideration.

The decision regarding the continuation of MGNREGS work in April has not yet been formally announced. However, reports indicate that the government may release an official statement on March 17.

The discussion comes as the implementation timeline for certain programmes linked to rural employment is being reassessed. Initial plans suggested implementation from April 1, but that timeline may be postponed.

If the schedule is revised, the programme could begin implementation from May instead of the start of the financial year. Officials are expected to clarify the final timeline once the government issues its announcement.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme provides wage employment to rural households through public works. The scheme is implemented across the country to support livelihood opportunities in rural areas.

The government is currently reviewing allocations, timelines, and workday distribution before confirming the next phase of implementation. A final decision is expected once the Centre completes the policy review process.
