NewDelhi,March,23,2026: The Oil Ministry has clarified that there is no plan to introduce 10 kg LPG cylinders for domestic use. The clarification came on March 23 after media reports suggested oil companies were considering smaller cylinders due to supply concerns.
The focus keyword LPG 10 kg cylinders was mentioned in media reports claiming oil marketing companies were planning to reduce cylinder size from 14.2 kg to 10 kg to increase supply distribution. However, the government has denied these reports.
According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, the reports about introducing 10 kg LPG cylinders are completely speculative and not based on any official proposal. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry handling marketing and refinery division, clarified this during a media interaction.
She stated that the reports were purely speculative and there was no such plan under consideration. She also advised the public not to believe rumors related to LPG cylinder changes.
Media reports earlier suggested that due to tensions in West Asia and possible LPG supply shortages, oil marketing companies were considering reducing cylinder weight to ensure wider distribution of cooking gas to households. Reports also mentioned the possibility of filling 10 kg LPG in existing cylinders.
Currently, domestic LPG consumers receive 14.2 kg cylinders. Reports claimed that a 10 kg cylinder could last around one month for an average household, while a 14.2 kg cylinder typically lasts 35 to 40 days.
The reports suggested that reducing cylinder size could help manage supply during crisis situations and ensure that LPG distribution reaches more households. However, the Petroleum Ministry’s clarification has now put an end to these speculations.
The government has clearly stated that there is no proposal to introduce 10 kg LPG cylinders for domestic consumers at present.
