New Delhi, April 03,2026: India Russia strategic partnership was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov on Thursday. The leaders reviewed economic cooperation, connectivity routes and energy security cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, Denis Manturov briefed Prime Minister Modi on the implementation of the roadmap for the special and privileged strategic partnership agreed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s India visit in December 2025.
Both sides discussed key areas including economic cooperation, connectivity projects and energy security. Russia continues to play an important role in supplying fertilizers, crude oil and LPG to India amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.
Manturov also informed the Prime Minister about progress in trade relations, especially fertilizer supply which is important for India’s agriculture sector. The two countries are also working on new plans to reduce the trade imbalance and make bilateral trade more balanced.
Connectivity and New Trade Routes
Connectivity was one of the major topics discussed during the meeting. Both countries are exploring alternative transport corridors to reduce dependence on traditional routes and lower logistics costs.
The International North South Transport Corridor and the Chennai Vladivostok Eastern Maritime Corridor were discussed as key projects. These routes are expected to significantly reduce transportation time between India and Russia once fully developed.
Future High Level Visits
Prime Minister Modi recalled Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit last year and welcomed continued high level engagement between the two countries. Diplomatic sources indicated that Prime Minister Modi may visit Russia in 2026, which could further strengthen bilateral relations.
The meeting also focused on expanding cooperation beyond energy into industrial collaboration and people to people ties. Officials said regular high level meetings reflect mutual trust between the two countries.
India continues to strengthen its strategic autonomy by maintaining strong relations with long term partners like Russia amid changing global geopolitical developments.
