New Delhi, 03.04.2025: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Poonam Gupta as a Deputy Governor for a period of three years. The decision was announced on Wednesday.

Poonam Gupta is currently the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and serves as the Convener of the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission.
Gupta has an impressive academic background. She holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA. She also earned a Master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. In 1998, she was awarded the EXIM Bank Award for her doctoral research in international economics.
With her appointment, Poonam Gupta joins the team of RBI Deputy Governors, which currently includes Swaminathan J, T Rabi Shankar, and M Rajeshwar Rao.
Her expertise in economics and experience with global financial institutions, such as the World Bank, are expected to contribute significantly to India’s central banking system.
