New Delhi, June 9, 2024 – Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi has been sworn in for a third consecutive term, marking a historic moment in Indian politics. The 73-year-old leader, who heads a coalition government, has now matched the record of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who won in the 1952, 1957, and 1962 general elections.

In a significant gesture, members of the transgender community were invited to bless the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government during the oath-taking ceremony. This inclusive move underscores the administration’s commitment to social harmony and equality.

PM Modi Begins Third Term with Inclusive Oath-Taking Ceremony

Narendra Modi has been inaugurated for a third term as Prime Minister, an event marked by historic parallels and inclusive gestures. By inviting transgender community members to the ceremony, the Modi administration has emphasized its commitment to social equity. As part of his coalition strategy, Modi is incorporating key MPs from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana into his Cabinet, reflecting the NDA’s robust representation in southern India. The NDA, which secured 286 seats overall with the BJP winning 240, has demonstrated resilience and adaptability in this election cycle. Leaders from seven South Asian and Indian Ocean nations attended the ceremony, highlighting Modi’s diplomatic prowess.

Coalition Government: Representation from Southern States

Rewarding its coalition partners, particularly in the southern states, the BJP-led NDA government is set to include several Members of Parliament (MPs) from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the Council of Ministers. Notably, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will see two of its MPs, Ram Mohan Naidu and Pemmasani Chandrashekhar, take ministerial oaths. Additionally, representatives from the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) and the BJP in Andhra Pradesh will be part of the new Cabinet.

Prominent leaders like H.D. Kumaraswamy of JD(S), and BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal are also expected to join the Cabinet. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Pralhad Joshi will continue to hold significant portfolios.

Election Results and Cabinet Composition

In the recent elections, the NDA secured 286 seats, while the BJP won 240 seats, falling short of the 272 majority mark. This is a decrease from the 303 and 282 seats the BJP won in 2019 and 2014, respectively. Despite this, the coalition has successfully formed the government, showcasing the enduring popularity of PM Modi and his leadership.

International Presence

The swearing-in ceremony was graced by leaders from seven countries across South Asia and the Indian Ocean region, reflecting India’s growing diplomatic outreach and influence under Modi’s leadership.

As Narendra Modi embarks on his third term as Prime Minister, the nation looks forward to continued progress and development. His inclusive approach, as demonstrated by the participation of the transgender community and representation from southern coalition partners, signals a commitment to unity and diversity.
