Reetika Hooda’s Golden Olympic Dream: India’s Last Hope for Gold at Paris 2024

Paris.09.08.2024: As the 2024 Paris Olympics progress, India’s hopes for an elusive gold medal now rest solely on the shoulders of wrestler Reetika Hooda. With the Indian contingent of 117 athletes having secured six medals—five bronze and one silver—Reetika is the country’s final shot at gold in this edition of the Games.

The Journey So Far

The Indian flag has flown high at many events, but none have yet reached the pinnacle of Olympic glory. The silver medal came from Neeraj Chopra, who added to his legacy after winning gold in Tokyo. However, the nation is still waiting for its golden moment in Paris.

Enter Reetika Hooda, a 23-year-old wrestler competing in the women’s 76kg category. Before she embarked on her journey to the French capital, Reetika expressed her determination and desire to make India proud by winning gold. Little did she realize that within weeks, the hopes of over a billion people would be pinned on her.

The Road Ahead

Reetika’s path to glory is fraught with challenges. Her first opponent on Saturday, August 9, will be Hungary’s Bernadett Nagy—a two-time European Championships medallist, currently ranked 16th in the world. If she manages to clear this hurdle, Reetika could face Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy, the current world number one and a two-time World Championships medallist.

Despite the daunting competition, Reetika remains undeterred. Her journey to the Olympics has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by her resilience and ability to defy expectations.

A History of Breaking Records

Reetika’s ascent to the top of the wrestling world has been meteoric. Prior to the Olympics, she was not seen as a top medal contender. The same was true before the 2023 U-23 World Wrestling Championships. In that tournament, Reetika faced off against higher-ranked opponents, including Rita Talismanova and Anastasiya Alpyeyeva, both of whom were ranked in the top 10.

Reetika stunned everyone by defeating them and ultimately winning the gold medal, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat at the U-23 World Championships. “India has won numerous medals at the U-23 World Championships, but no one had won a gold medal. So, when I went to Albania for that competition, I wanted to be the first Indian to do so. Record agar banwana hai to gold to chahiye tha (I had to win the gold medal to be in the record books),” Reetika said.

Her next goal was clear: to earn an Olympic quota in the 76kg division, something no Indian had ever achieved. At the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, Reetika once again rose to the occasion, defeating higher-ranked opponents like Wang Juan and Chang Hui-tsz to secure her spot in Paris.

The Nation’s Final Hope

As Reetika prepares to take to the mat in Paris, she carries with her the dreams of a nation hungry for Olympic success. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and the unyielding spirit of an athlete who refuses to be underestimated.

India will be watching closely on August 9, hoping that Reetika Hooda can bring home the country’s first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics and etch her name into the annals of sporting history.

Stay tuned for live updates and in-depth coverage of Reetika Hooda’s matches at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
