Hundreds of conversations shared through Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot were briefly discoverable through search engines, raising fresh concerns about AI privacy and the handling of publicly shared chatbot conversations. Anthropic has since taken steps to prevent the links from appearing in search results.
According to a Popular News Channel report, users who had chosen to generate a public share link for their Claude conversations unknowingly made those pages accessible to search engines such as Google. By using site-specific search queries, users were able to locate more than 200 publicly available Claude conversations spanning at least 25 pages of search results.
The shared conversations covered a wide range of topics, including personal resumes containing names and contact details, workplace discussions, healthcare-related research, software development, cloud security projects, and other sensitive information. Some conversations also contained personal questions and experimental AI prompts.
An Anthropic spokesperson told the BBC that Claude users remain in control of whether they choose to share a conversation. The company stated that shared links are “not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves.” However, the spokesperson acknowledged that once a conversation is made publicly accessible through a shared link, it can be indexed or archived by third-party services unless search indexing is blocked.
The issue has now been addressed, with search indexing of Claude conversation links no longer occurring. Google also clarified that it does not determine which pages become public on the web. Instead, website owners decide whether pages can be crawled and indexed, and Google respects those settings.
This is not the first time AI chatbot conversations have surfaced publicly. Similar incidents affected OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Elon Musk-owned Grok in previous cases, prompting changes to how publicly shared chat links are handled.
The incident serves as a reminder for users to carefully review privacy settings before sharing AI chatbot conversations. While shared links are designed for collaboration, they may become publicly accessible if website owners allow search engines to index them.
Anthropic’s latest action is expected to reduce the visibility of shared Claude conversations in search engines, but privacy experts continue to advise users against sharing confidential personal or business information through publicly accessible links.
