Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly deployed a Digital User Experience Monitoring tool on company-issued laptops used by its employees, according to a Moneycontrol report. The development has raised questions about data security, employee privacy and the extent of workplace monitoring at one of Indiaโ€™s largest IT services companies.

According to sources cited by Moneycontrol, the tool can provide information about applications accessed on employee devices and the amount of time spent on those applications. However, the exact capabilities of the software, the vendor behind it and the categories of employee data being collected have not been publicly disclosed.

Monitoring raises questions over data access

The reported deployment is understood to have potential cybersecurity and operational uses. Digital experience monitoring tools can help companies identify application performance problems, connectivity issues and other technology-related difficulties affecting employees.

At the same time, the technology has prompted concerns about whether information collected from company laptops could also be used to monitor individual employee activity. It remains unclear whether the data is collected at an individual level, aggregated for IT and security purposes, or made available to business managers.

Scope of monitoring remains unclear

Several important details remain undisclosed, including the name of the monitoring software, its complete range of capabilities, which teams can access the information and whether monitoring goes beyond system performance and digital experience metrics.

Experts cited in the report said such technology can have legitimate operational purposes but could also be used for employee surveillance depending on how it is implemented and governed. The issue is particularly significant for a workforce approaching 600,000 employees.

Client systems add another layer

The monitoring of employees working through client-managed virtual desktop infrastructure could create additional complications. Any monitoring involving client environments may have to account for confidentiality requirements and data protection obligations.

Earlier industry scrutiny

The development comes amid wider use of workforce monitoring technologies across the Indian IT sector. Cognizant previously faced scrutiny over its use of ProHance, a workforce management platform capable of tracking information such as login times, application usage, website activity and periods of inactivity on company laptops.

TCS has also expanded its digital workplace technology initiatives. Earlier this year, the company announced Workspace Experience Studio, built using Zscaler Digital Experience technology and focused on workplace observability, digital experience monitoring, zero-trust security and AI-powered analytics. Moneycontrol reported that it could not independently establish whether the newly reported laptop monitoring tool is connected to that offering.

Transparency remains key issue

The latest development is likely to keep attention focused on how large technology companies balance cybersecurity and operational efficiency with employee privacy. The specific scope and governance of TCSโ€™s reported monitoring system remain unclear pending further information from the company.
