The Telangana government has granted administrative sanction of ₹2,278.14 crore for land acquisition and utility shifting to develop the proposed Adilabad Joint User Airfield. The project is expected to strengthen regional air connectivity in North Telangana while supporting both civil aviation and defence operations.
According to the government order, the project will cover a total of 2,009.23 acres. Of this, 1,609.23 acres have been earmarked for the Indian Air Force, while the remaining 400 acres will be used for civil aviation infrastructure, including a passenger terminal, cargo facilities, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, and aircraft hangars. The approval marks a significant step in advancing the long-pending airport project.
Land Acquisition and Infrastructure Development
The Telangana government has instructed the Adilabad District Collector to complete land acquisition and utility shifting by December 31, 2026. The work includes diversion of existing roads, relocation of high-tension transmission towers, shifting of water utilities, and other infrastructure required for the airport development.
Officials said the airport is being planned as a Joint User Airport (JUA), allowing both Indian Air Force and civilian aircraft operations. Earlier proposals required a smaller land parcel, but following technical assessments by the Ministry of Defence, the project was expanded to accommodate a 9,000-foot runway capable of handling Airbus A321 aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) for both day and night operations.

“The project is expected to improve regional connectivity and create new opportunities for industrial growth, logistics and investment in North Telangana,” Roads, Buildings and Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said while announcing the approval.

The Adilabad airport is part of Telangana’s broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure beyond Hyderabad. Along with the proposed airports at Warangal and other locations, the project is expected to improve connectivity, support economic development, and strengthen transportation infrastructure across the state.
The next phase of the project will focus on completing land acquisition, shifting utilities, and initiating subsequent development works in coordination with the Airports Authority of India, the Indian Air Force, and the Telangana government.
