Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has congratulated Argentine football legend Lionel Messi following his announcement of retirement from international football. The Chief Minister recalled his meeting with Messi in Hyderabad and said spending a few minutes with the football icon on the field was a great privilege.

Messi announced his retirement from Argentina’s national team on August 31, bringing an end to a remarkable international career that began in 2005. According to Reuters, Messi finished his international career as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer, with 207 appearances and 125 goals.
Responding to the announcement, Revanth Reddy said Messi had enthralled, entertained, energised and inspired the football world. “It was a great privilege to share a few minutes on a football turf with you in Hyderabad. Football won’t be the same again without the GOAT. Farewell and keep inspiring,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.
The Chief Minister also recalled Messi’s visit to Hyderabad during the GOAT India Tour in December 2025. Messi, along with Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, participated in football-related activities and interacted with young players during the visit. Revanth Reddy had also joined the football activities in Hyderabad.
Messi’s international career included major successes with Argentina. He helped the national team win the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. Argentina also reached the 2026 World Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time.
Revanth Reddy said Messi’s journey, marked by talent, hard work, determination, sportsmanship and humility, would continue to inspire future generations. He also highlighted the football star’s influence beyond the field and his contribution to encouraging young people through sport.
Messi’s decision applies to international football with Argentina and does not mark an immediate end to his professional playing career. He continues to play club football for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
