Hyderabad,April 01,2026: Telangana colleges have started implementing a facial recognition attendance system from April 1. The new system applies to degree and polytechnic students, along with teaching and non-teaching staff.

The facial recognition attendance system will now replace the existing biometric method in government colleges across the state. Officials from the Collegiate Education Department have issued instructions to register in the attendance app and mark presence only through this platform.

The system has been rolled out across all colleges starting Wednesday. Students, lecturers, and other staff members are required to scan their faces using a smartphone-based application to record attendance.

There are 149 government degree colleges in Telangana, with around 1.5 lakh students currently enrolled. Authorities stated that all individuals in these institutions must use the face scan method for attendance going forward.

Officials noted that the earlier biometric system faced several issues, including fingerprint recognition failures, overcrowding near machines, and technical glitches. The shift to facial recognition is intended to address these challenges and streamline the attendance process.

The decision was taken following directions from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The new system is expected to simplify attendance marking and reduce dependency on physical devices.

According to officials, the facial recognition attendance system may also help prevent misuse of government funds related to scholarships and fee reimbursement. Attendance data recorded through the app will support better monitoring and transparency.

Previously, biometric attendance was widely used in colleges, but recurring technical problems led to inconvenience for both students and staff. The new digital approach aims to improve efficiency and reliability.

With the system now in effect statewide, colleges will continue monitoring its implementation and usage through the official app.
