United States Of America,April 01 2026: The Cicada COVID variant BA 3.2 has been detected in at least 25 US states, according to health authorities. The variant is being monitored by global health agencies as cases increase in several regions.
The cicada covid variant ba 3.2 is a highly mutated COVID-19 variant tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. Health officials said the variant has been spreading internationally and has recently begun accounting for a noticeable number of infections.
According to health authorities, the variant carries around 70 to 75 mutations, which may help it evade immune protection from previous infections and vaccines. Despite the mutations, experts say the symptoms are similar to other COVID-19 variants.
Reported symptoms include runny or stuffy nose, fever, headache, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat, cough, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in smell or taste. Some patients have also reported severe sore throat.
Medical experts said there is currently no evidence that the variant causes more severe illness than other circulating variants. However, the mutations could increase the possibility of new infection waves, including a potential summer surge.
The variant was first detected in a traveler entering the United States in June 2025. The first local case in a US patient was reported in January 2026. Since then, the variant has been found in wastewater samples and traveler testing programs across multiple locations.
Health officials recommend testing if symptoms appear, staying home when sick, wearing high-quality masks, and staying up to date with COVID-19 booster vaccinations. Vaccines may still help prevent severe illness even if infection protection is reduced.
Officials continue to monitor the spread of the variant and update public health guidance as more data becomes available.
