New Delhi, March,17,2026: US President Donald Trump suggested a possible Trump Cuba takeover during a press briefing on Monday. The comments came as Cuba faced a nationwide power blackout following a prolonged oil blockade.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the United States could potentially take control of Cuba, describing the island nation as weakened amid a deepening energy crisis.

During the briefing, Donald Trump said he believes he may have the opportunity to take Cuba in some form. He told reporters that the United States could either free the country or take control of it.

Trump stated that Cuba is currently in a fragile condition. He said the nation is weakened and suggested that the United States could decide what actions to take.

The remarks came after Cuba experienced a complete collapse of its national power grid on Monday. The blackout followed weeks of fuel shortages linked to an oil blockade led by the United States.

Cuba has struggled with repeated power outages as its government faces difficulties securing fuel needed for electricity generation. The island nation has a population of about 9.6 million people.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel recently said the country has not received a major fuel shipment for three months. The shortage has been linked to the ongoing embargo imposed by Washington.

The Trump administration has been applying economic pressure on Cuba in an effort to influence political change in the country. The strategy is aimed at increasing financial dependence on the United States after decades of one party rule.

Trump also referred to the long standing tensions between the United States and Cuba. He said he has heard discussions about possible US action regarding Cuba throughout his life.

The current crisis intensified after the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro earlier this year. Venezuela had been a key ally and oil supplier to Cuba, and the disruption has significantly affected the island’s energy supply.

Trump said Cuba may seek an agreement with the United States in the near future. He added that Washington could either reach a deal with the country or take other necessary steps.

The situation continues to develop as tensions remain high amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran and wider geopolitical shifts affecting the region.
