Washington, April 3, 2026: The US Army Chief Randy George has been asked to step down from his position by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. The decision was announced on April 3, 2026, marking another major leadership change in the US military.
Randy George was serving as the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army since September 2023. His term was originally expected to continue until 2027.
US Army Chief Asked To Resign
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth asked General Randy George to immediately step down from his role. The Pentagon thanked him for his decades of service to the nation, according to an official statement shared by Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell.
Following his departure, Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve will serve as the acting Army Chief of Staff.
Career Of Randy George
General Randy George graduated from the West Point Military Academy and began his career as an infantry officer. During his military career, he served in several major conflicts including the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan.
He held multiple leadership roles throughout his career, including commanding units at company, battalion, brigade, division and corps levels. He also served as the 38th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army before becoming the Army Chief in 2023.
George also worked as a top military aide to then Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin between 2021 and 2022.
Other Military Leadership Changes
Reports said that along with Randy George, two other Army officers were also removed from their roles. These include Major General William Green and General David Hodne.
The move comes as part of several leadership changes in the US military since Pete Hegseth became Defence Secretary.
What Happens Next
General Christopher LaNeve will take over as acting US Army Chief until a new permanent Chief of Staff is appointed. More leadership changes in the US military are expected in the coming months.
