New Delhi,March,26,2026: The new income tax rules 2026 will introduce major changes in income tax filing documents in India. The new rules will come into effect from April 1, 2026, replacing Form 16 with a new document called Form 130.
Under the new Income Tax Rules, several tax documents will be renamed as part of the Income Tax Act, 2025 implementation. These changes are aimed at simplifying tax filing and reducing errors.
Form 16 is currently issued as a TDS certificate for salaried employees. It contains details of salary income, tax deducted at source, and deductions claimed during the financial year. Employers are required to issue Form 16 to employees by June 15 of the following financial year.
As per the new rules effective from April 1, 2026, Form 16 will be replaced by Form 130. This new document will serve as the income certificate for salaried employees and can be used for income tax return filing and other income-related purposes.
Similarly, Form 16A, which is issued for non-salary income such as rent, interest, and consultancy fees, will be renamed as Form 131. This document must be issued within 15 days from the date of filing the quarterly TDS statement.
Other tax documents are also being renamed under the new tax law. The document currently known as Form 26AS will be renamed as Document 168. The quarterly TDS statement currently called Form 24Q will be renamed as Document 138 under the new Income Tax Act.
These changes are part of the Income Tax Act, 2025 and will be implemented from the financial year starting April 1, 2026. The objective of these changes is to simplify the tax filing process and reduce errors in tax documentation.
Salaried employees, pensioners, and other taxpayers will need these updated documents for filing their income tax returns in the upcoming financial years under the new system.
