Hanuman Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman. Devotees observe the day with prayers, temple visits, and recitation of sunderkand, which is believed to remove difficulties and bring strength and protection.
According to religious beliefs, Lord Hanuman is known by many names such as Bajrangbali, Kesari Nandan, Ramdoot, and Sankat Mochan. The name Sankat Mochan means the one who removes troubles. Many devotees believe that chanting Hanuman’s name and reading sunderkand helps overcome problems and obstacles.
As per Ramayana, Lord Hanuman played a major role when Ravana took Sita to Lanka. Hanuman crossed the ocean, located Sita, and later burned Lanka. He also helped Lord Rama in the war against Ravana.
During the war, Lakshmana was seriously injured by Meghnath. Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani herb from a mountain, which helped save Lakshmana’s life.
Religious stories also say that Hanuman rescued Shani from Ravana’s captivity in Lanka. In another story, Hanuman helped Sugriva regain his kingdom and respect.
It is also believed that during the Mahabharata war, Hanuman protected Arjuna by sitting on his chariot flag and safeguarding him during the battle.
