In an emotional sendoff, Vistara’s final flight, the joint venture airline between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, bid farewell to its operations on November 12, 2024. The airline’s last flight departed from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, marking the end of an era in Indian aviation.

The final flight, UK 995, took off from Mumbai at 10:35 pm and landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 12:35 am. As the aircraft touched down, airport staff and ground handlers gathered to bid an emotional farewell.

Videos shared on social media showed airport staff and passengers moved as they said goodbye to Vistara. At Gujarat’s Vadodara airport, staff members were seen waving flags and banners, while at Odisha’s Bhubaneswar airport, employees gathered to take a group photo with the airline’s crew.

Vistara’s closure follows the airline’s merger with Air India, another Tata Group-owned carrier. The merger aims to create a stronger, more competitive entity in the Indian aviation market.

Industry experts believe Vistara’s exit will consolidate the Indian aviation sector, narrowing it down to a two-player race between Air India and IndiGo.

“Vistara’s closure will lead to a more streamlined and efficient market,” said Amber Dubey, aviation expert and partner at KPMG. “The merger with Air India will create a stronger entity, but it will also reduce competition.”

Vistara’s journey began on January 9, 2015, when its first flight took off. The airline quickly gained popularity for its premium services and expanded to over 40 domestic and international destinations.

As Vistara bid farewell, social media was flooded with nostalgic messages and memories from passengers and employees.

“Vistara will always hold a special place in my heart,” tweeted Rohan Bhatnagar, a frequent flyer. “Their service was unparalleled, and I’ll miss flying with them.”

Vistara’s employees also took to social media to express their gratitude and sadness.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” wrote Captain Rohit Bhasin, a Vistara pilot. “I’ll cherish the memories and experiences I’ve had with this amazing team.”

As Vistara’s last flight took off, the Indian aviation industry marked the end of an era. While the merger with Air India promises a brighter future, Vistara’s legacy of premium service and commitment to excellence will be fondly remembered.
