Hyderabad, January 29, 2025 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The elections will take place on February 27, with vote counting scheduled for March 3.

Election Details

In Telangana, elections will be held for:

  • Medak-Nizamabad-Karimnagar Graduates’ constituency
  • Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency
  • One more Teachers’ constituency

In Andhra Pradesh, elections will be conducted for:

  • East-West Godavari Graduates’ constituency
  • Krishna-Guntur Graduates’ constituency
  • Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam Teachers’ constituency

Important Dates

  • Notification issue date: February 3
  • Last date to submit nominations: February 10
  • Scrutiny of nominations: February 11
  • Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: February 13

Starting today, the Model Code of Conduct will be enforced in all the above constituencies.

Current MLC Representatives

In Telangana:

  • T. Jeevan Reddy (Congress) holds the Medak-Nizamabad-Karimnagar Graduates’ seat
  • K. Raghottham Reddy and Alugubelli Narsi Reddy represent the Teachers’ constituencies

In Andhra Pradesh:

  • Illa Venkateshwara Rao (Progressive Democratic Front) holds the East-West Godavari Graduates’ seat
  • K.S. Lakshmana Rao (Progressive Democratic Front) represents the Krishna-Guntur Graduates’ constituency
  • Pakalapati Raghu Verma (Independent) is the MLC for Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam Teachers’ constituency

These representatives’ terms will end on March 29, 2025.

What is the Legislative Council?

The Legislative Council is the Upper House of a state’s legislature, similar to the Rajya Sabha at the national level. It is not mandatory for states to have a Legislative Council, and currently, only six states in India follow a bicameral system:

  • Telangana
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Bihar
  • Karnataka
  • Maharashtra
  • Uttar Pradesh

This election will decide the new representatives for the Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies in these states.
