Former Pinapaka MLA and BRS leader Rega Kantharao has reportedly been taken into custody by Panjagutta police in Hyderabad in connection with a complaint alleging sexual harassment and financial fraud. The case was registered after a woman approached police with allegations that she was sexually exploited after being promised marriage.

According to reports, the woman alleged that she became acquainted with Kantharao in connection with a YouTube channel interview in 2022. She reportedly told police that he later promised to marry her and allegedly subjected her to sexual exploitation.

The complainant also alleged that Kantharao used her private photographs to threaten or blackmail her. She further alleged that he obtained around Rs 4 lakh from her on the pretext of investing in a real-estate business and did not return the money.

Based on the complaint, Panjagutta police registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to reports published on the case. A July 31 report by Vidhaatha said the case included BNS Sections 69 and 351(2).

Kantharao has denied the allegations, according to the details provided in reports concerning his legal challenge. He approached the Telangana High Court seeking to quash the case, arguing that the complaint was false and politically and personally motivated.

His petition also questioned the timing of the complaint, with Kantharao reportedly arguing that the alleged incidents dated back several years. The High Court proceedings form part of the legal process, while the police investigation into the allegations is continuing.

Kantharao is a senior BRS leader from Bhadradri Kothagudem district and previously represented the Pinapaka constituency. Election-affidavit records identify him as a former MLA and show that he contested the 2023 Telangana Assembly election from Pinapaka on a BRS ticket.

He has also remained active in Telangana politics after leaving the Assembly. Recent reports identified him as the BRS Bhadradri Kothagudem district president and quoted him in connection with party programmes and protests in the district.

The allegations against Kantharao remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. Further developments are expected as police examine the complaint, collect evidence and proceed with the case before the courts.
