Telangana government will conduct a Varuna Yagam at Nagarjuna Sagar on Monday, August 10, seeking better rainfall and improved inflows into the state’s reservoirs. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is scheduled to attend the concluding ceremony as concerns grow over water availability during the current monsoon season.
The ritual is being organised against the backdrop of rainfall concerns and relatively low storage levels in major reservoirs. Nagarjuna Sagar, one of Telangana’s key water resources, has come under particular focus as the state looks for stronger inflows from the Krishna basin.
According to reports, the government hopes that improved monsoon activity will strengthen inflows into reservoirs linked to both the Krishna and Godavari river systems. The situation has also raised concerns over agriculture and water availability if rainfall remains inadequate during the remaining monsoon period.
The Varuna Yagam is a traditional religious ritual performed with prayers for rainfall. Arrangements have been made at Nagarjuna Sagar for the programme, with priests conducting the rituals and the Chief Minister expected to participate in the concluding proceedings.
Alongside the religious programme, the government is considering measures aimed at reducing the impact of water stress on agriculture. These include encouraging efficient irrigation practices and promoting crops that can withstand periods of lower rainfall.
The government’s decision has also drawn criticism from the Opposition, which has called for concrete measures to support farmers facing difficulties because of inadequate rainfall. The Opposition has argued that immediate assistance and practical water-management measures should accompany any symbolic or religious programme.
The focus now remains on the progress of the monsoon and the resulting inflows into Telangana’s major reservoirs. Further rainfall will be important for improving storage levels, supporting irrigation requirements and easing concerns over water availability in the state.
