Bhadrachalam: Congress party leaders and workers organised a large motorcycle rally in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday, demanding that the Leader of the Opposition resign from the post and account for public funds. The rally was held under the leadership of Bhadrachalam MLA Dr. Tellam Venkatrao following a call from Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The rally began at the Bhadrachalam MLA camp office and passed through Ambedkar Centre, UB Road, Nehru Market and GCC Road before returning to Ambedkar Centre. A large number of Congress leaders, party workers and supporters participated in the programme on motorcycles.
After the rally, Congress leaders addressed the media at Ambedkar Centre and criticised the main opposition leadership for allegedly remaining away from the people. They said the Leader of the Opposition has a responsibility in a democracy to raise public issues in the Assembly and question the government over its performance.
Congress leaders alleged that the opposition leader had remained largely confined to a farmhouse for nearly 1,000 days and questioned how the concerns of people could be effectively raised if the main opposition leadership remained away from the public sphere.
The Congress leaders also referred to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s allegation that Rs. 22.24 crore in public funds had been spent over the past three years while the opposition leader remained away from public activities. They said the Chief Minister had demanded the resignation of the opposition leader and called upon party workers to take the issue to the people.
According to the Congress leaders, the party has planned cycle and motorcycle rallies at mandal headquarters, large demonstrations at district centres and protest programmes at Ambedkar intersections to highlight the issue.
The Bhadrachalam rally was attended by Congress party leaders, workers, elected representatives, NSUI and Youth Congress members and a large number of young people. Bhadrachalam Major Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Punem Krishna, senior Congress leaders, youth leaders and representatives of affiliated organisations also participated.
The programme forms part of the Congress party’s political campaign in Telangana against the main opposition leadership. The allegations raised during the rally were made by Congress leaders as part of the political programme.
