Kolkata.15.09.2024: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the junior doctors who were protesting on Saturday. She assured them that their concerns would be addressed and invited them for a discussion. However, the meeting did not happen as planned because the doctors claimed they were asked to leave after waiting for three hours at the Chief Minister’s residence.
The doctors had initially refused to enter Banerjee’s residence because their request for a live broadcast of the meeting was turned down. Banerjee went outside to speak with them and asked them not to insult her. She promised to provide a signed copy of the meeting minutes. The doctors agreed to attend the meeting without the live broadcast but were told to leave as it was too late.
In a related development, the CBI, which is investigating a rape-murder case involving former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, added new charges against him and arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala police station, for tampering with evidence.
Banerjee, who was accompanied by DGP Rajiv Kumar, said she would not take any action against the protesting doctors and promised to review their demands. She asked them to return to work and assured them that she would discuss their issues with senior officials. She also urged the CBI to speed up its investigation.
The proposed talks fell through after the doctors refused to enter the meeting venue without live streaming. Banerjee appealed to them at the gates of her residence, stating that live streaming was not possible due to court restrictions but that she would provide a video recording later. Despite her efforts, the talks did not take place, and the senior officials left the scene, citing the delay.
