New Delhi,March,28,2026: The Centre on March 28 dismissed rumours about a possible lockdown in India 2026. Union ministers clarified that no such proposal is under consideration despite global uncertainties.lockdown in india 2026

Amid rising concerns over tensions in West Asia, reports circulating on social media claimed that a nationwide lockdown could be imposed due to potential fuel shortages. The government firmly rejected these claims, calling them baseless and misleading.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that there is no truth in the rumours. He urged citizens not to panic or believe unverified information being shared online.

Following these reports, long queues were seen at petrol pumps in several areas, as people rushed to refuel fearing supply disruptions. The government responded quickly to reassure the public about adequate fuel availability.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also addressed the issue in the Rajya Sabha while replying to the discussion on the Finance Bill 2026. She acknowledged that global uncertainty exists but assured that the government is closely monitoring energy supply chains and transportation of essential goods.

She clearly stated that there is no proposal or plan to impose any lockdown in the country. The minister warned that such false information can create unnecessary panic and disrupt normal life.

Over the past month, international crude oil prices have risen sharply from 70 dollars per barrel to 122 dollars. This has led to a 20 to 50 percent increase in fuel prices globally.

However, the Indian government has taken steps to reduce the burden on citizens. Sitharaman said excise duty on petrol has been reduced from Rs 13 to Rs 3, while the duty on diesel has been completely removed.

Despite a decline in government revenue, these measures are expected to provide relief to both oil companies and consumers.

The government has reiterated that fuel reserves are sufficient and there is no immediate threat to supply. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
